Development and Practical Use of a Wire Rope Guardrail System for Two-lane Roads in Japan

چکیده
Fatal high-speed head-on collisions often occur in limited spaces on two-lane roads without median strips. While the installation of such strips is permitted under the Road Construction Ordinance, their provision to date has been limited due to the high associated costs. Wire rope guardrail systems, which can be seen as an alternative to median strips, involve the use of thin posts, have a buffering function and require minimal width. The purpose of this study was to develop a wire rope guardrail system with a buffering function as a separator for two-lane roads. CG simulation and collision experiments using real vehicles were conducted to determine the characteristics of the fence, and performance tests were conducted in accordance with guard fence installation criteria. As a result, a wire rope guardrail system that satisfies Japan’s Am performance standard criteria for expressway median strips was developed.

Estimation Model of Two-Lane Rural Roads Safety Index According to Characteristics of the Road and Drivers’ Behavior
Vehicle crashes are amongst the major causes of mortality and results in losses of lives and properties. A large number of the vehicle crashes occur on rural roads. Accidents become more noteworthy in two-lane roads due to going and coming traffic. Therefore, prediction of crashes and their causes are considerably important to reduce the number and severity of the accidents. The safety index is...
متن کاملDevelopment and Practical Application of a Bridge Management System (J-BMS) in Japan
This paper presents a new bridge management system (J-BMS). It is integrated with a concrete bridge rating expert system that can be used to evaluate the serviceability of existing concrete bridges. The proposed J-BMS not only evaluates the performance of bridges, but also offers a rehabilitation strategy based on a combination of maintenance cost minimization and quality maximization. In this ...
متن کاملModeling the Operational Speed of Tangents and Curves in Four-lane Highways Based on Geometric and Roadside Factors
Operational speed is an index that represents drivers’ speeding behaviors and shows the comfort and safety levels they experience. Many models had been proposed to predict operational speed in tangent and curve segments of highways. Most of these works had used geometric, with few of them conducted using roadside variables to predict operational speed. Also, the operational speed study in multi...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of single- and double- faced W-beam guardrails under vehicular impacts on six-lane divided freeways
W-beam guardrails are safety devices installed on highway medians to prevent cross-median crashes. For six-lane, 46-foot median divided freeways, the paved shoulder policy requires two 12-foot median shoulders, which reduce the width of median ditch to 22 feet. For positive pavement drainage consideration, the median slope should be changed to 4H:1V, which exceeds the optimal 6H:1V slope for pl...
